Coursera: First Stop Korean!

On Coursera's website I chose the First stop Korean course, Yonsei University which means I will learn Korean language (Hangul). The teacher of this course is Seung Hae Kang, from Korean education as a foreign language in the graduate school of education at Yonsei University.

1. 1. Basic Vowels.

First we are introduced to hangul. Hangul was introduced by King Sejong. When Hangeul was created, there were 28. This collection of 28 was given the name. Hun Min Jeong Which translate as correct sounds to educate the people. But, now the hangul used officially by the Korean public consists of 24 basic characters, 14 consonants, and 10 vowels.

This letter was created based on the philosophy of the old Korean people: MAN (), EARTH (), HEAVEN (•)

10 Basic Vowels:

a (aah),ja (yaa),eo (uuh),jeo (yuhh), o (Oh), jo (yoh), u (ooh), ju (you), eu (i~) (euh),i (E) .

Because hangeul letters cannot stand alone to produce vowel sounds, the 10 basic vowels must be combined with consonants + ieung (): , , , , , , , , , (A, O, O, U, Uu, Ya, Yo, Yo, Yu)

Quiz 1.1:

1. 2. 14 Basic Consonant

14 consonants were formed and how each one of the 14 consonants sound. 14 letters all consist of combinations or manipulations of the same 5 symbols.

Example of the consonant:

The 5 basic letters, & symbol:

  • The Velar sound ㄱ : The shape of a tongue that blocks the windpipe and the sound is made, when the real part of the tongue touches the soft palate (Velum)
  • The Alveolar sound ㄴ : The shape of a tongue when touching the gums of the upper teeth. This is the N sound in English.
  • The Labial sound (mieum) : The shape of the lips opening after they have pushed.
  • The Dental sound (siot) :  has a connection to teeth. This strong represents the tip of the tongue that is touching the back part of the upper teeth. There isn’t an exact equivalent in the English sound, and it is slightly different than the S and C sound.
  • The Glottal sound (ieung) : The shape of a throat and King Sejong thought that this sound would best represent the epiglottis which is the space between the vocal cords, and as a final consonant sound ieung is the same sound ng in song.

Quiz 1.2:

1. 3. Other Consonants and Vowels

There are 3 types of consonants taught by Seung Hae Kang:

  • Plain consonants (, , , , ) are pronounced without any strong aspiration (burst of air)
  • Aspirated consonants (, , , ) are pronounced like their plain counterparts but with strong aspiration
  • Tense consonants (, , , , ) are called (ssang) ‘twin’ letters in Korean, as their representation involves doubling the letters of several of the basic consonants
Then we are also given examples of pronunciations on words that almost look the same:

Quiz 1.3:

1. 4. Syllables and Final Consonants

In this session, I was taught how Syllable made from Consonant (c) + Vowel (V) + Consonant (C).

The Form:

  • 1st form vowels, Syllables cannot be formed with only vowels. We use the voiceless cycle as the initial consonant, and use vowels such as or , in the case of we write it from left to right.
  •  2nd form, the combination of consonant and vowels. The initial consonant  + the vowel= .
  • 3rd form, the combination of consonants, vowels and the final consonants. When combine the initial consonant ,  the vowel, and the final consonant =
  • 4th form, consonant is when consonants, vowels, and the double consonants are combined. Two final consonants are put together to form a double consonant.
Example: the initial consonant + the vowel + and the finer double consonants = . The double consonants, and thus it is not pronounced as it would when used as an initial consonant.

Quiz 1. 4:
